Yellow and Blue Make Green - Craft-Room Challenge DT

Hello, what a busy fortnight it's been, and it's time again for a new challenge over at the Craft-Room.  The entries into our Summer challenge were fabulous, I have the tough task of choosing a top 3!  This fortnight's challenge theme has been chosen by our wonderful and very talented leader, Zoe, and it's a colour challenge:

Yellow and Blue make Green

We are going to be quite strict with this one, you may only use the colours Yellow, Blue & Green.   If you are not using a support of those colours then it must be white, and the ink you stamp in must be either one of the three colours or black.   No other colours to sneak in please.

This challenge took me out of my comfort zone completely as I don't tend to use a lot of bright colours, but I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed getting really messy and inky, as it seems ages since I've done that!  I didn't think the stamp was really my kind of thing, but I actually loved using it, so I may have to treat myself to a couple more from this range :-).

I created a wall hanging using a page from an mdf book:

I coloured an A4 sheet of Ranger matt-coated card with distress inks in Evergreen Bough, Scattered Straw, Stormy Sky, Squeezed Lemonade, and Iced Spruce.  Once covered, I spritzed with water, dried, added more ink, then spritzed again, dried, etc, until I was happy with the result.

I covered the mdf page with some of the coloured card, and stamped the CI bunnies (CI-372).  I then stamped them again onto a different part of the card, cut them out and attached over the top.  They were stamped a third time on plain white card for the crowns, which were coloured with Scattered Straw, then I added a bit of sparkle with a Sakura clear glitter pen.

The sentiment, also coloured with Scattered Straw, is by Dylusions, and the foliage is by Indigo Blue and Hero Arts.  I dyed some seam binding in the same DIs to hang this from.

Unfortunately, my time has been very limited lately.  My daughter and grandson now have a little place of their own and moved out just over a week ago, so, as well as trying to help her, I have also been relocating my craft room (yet again) - each time I do this, there is more stuff to shift, lol!  I will miss them very much, but I should also have a bit (or a lot!) more time!

Here Comes Summer - Craft-Room Challenge DT

Hi, two (very lovely and sunny) weeks have flown by and it's time for a new challenge over at The Craft-Room.  We loved seeing what you made with your scraps in our last challenge - isn't it amazing what gorgeous creations can be made from left over pieces!  It was my turn to be the hostess this fortnight, and due to the time of the year with some of you thinking about summer holidays, and maybe even having just come back from one, I decided on the theme:

Here Comes Summer

You can make whatever you want, be it a card, scrapbook layout, 3d object, altered item, in fact anything at all which makes you think of summer.  The choice is yours.

Whenever I go on holiday, I can never find a beach bag the right size - I only want a small one for my bottle of suntan lotion, sunglasses, a little coin purse, some water and a couple of other bits n pieces, but they all seem to be so huge!  So, as I can't find one, I decided to have a go at making my own instead:

I used some thick canvas for the outside of the bag and added a trim of Laura Ashley fabric with some lace attached, and a bow made from SU seam binding.  On the front of the bag I used a Crafty Individuals stamp, and also a Bournemouth postmark from a different CI set.  I was unsure as to whether to use TAP for the image, or to stamp directly onto the fabric - I eventually decided to stamp straight onto the fabric as I thought the image would look nice a bit faded.

I even lined this bag in the same Laura Ashley fabric as the trim, lol:

I used some cream broderie anglaise trim to finish the inside seams, and inserted a zip across the top - the zip didn't really go to plan but I did manage to get it in and conceal it.  The straps are a thick cord which have well been stitched on so they're going nowhere!

Wish You Were Here (Postcard) - Craft-Room Challenge DT

Hi, another fortnight has flown by yet again, which means another challenge is launched over at the Craft-Room.  Your "So Sentimental" entries were fabulous, as always.  This time it is the lovely Hazel's turn to choose our theme, and she chose:

Wish You Were Here

This is what Hazel would like us to do:

I'd like you to make a postcard from a holiday destination, it can be from anywhere in the world or perhaps you've been visiting the beach or a historical place. The size of the postcard has to be 6 inches by 4 inches landscape or portrait. You can use any medium to make your postcard - digital postcards are allowed as well. Please no cards, layouts etc. with a postcard on, I just want you to make a postcard.  Any work that doesn't fit the theme will not be entered in the draw.

For my postcard (from Bournemouth!), I used a Crafty Individuals Elements stamp plate (CI-278),  stamped with Archival Ink in Black:

I masked off the puddle around the woman's feet and stamped her directly onto the card.  I then masked her completely and stamped the beach huts behind her, which I also completely masked.  The background sand and sea were coloured with distress inks, then the masks were removed. Leaving the woman and her parasol without colour,  I coloured the beach huts and the woman's hat with SU Watercolour Crayons (Regals) - this is the first time I've used these and I loved them.  I got a nice soft colour when very diluted, but this could be built up really easily to make it a lot stronger.  A white gel pen, smudged while still wet, created the waves, and once the birds were stamped I removed some colour with a wet paintbrush to make the stand out a bit more.

So Sentimental - Craft-Room Challenge DT

Hi, I hope you're all well.  Milder weather seems to have arrived in our little corner of the UK, which is nice for a change!  It's time for a new theme over at the Craft-Room Challenge, and this time it's the turn of our very talented Mervi to choose our theme, and she has chosen

So Sentimental

 Mervi would like to see your text, script or messages clearly, 

but otherwise your creation can be anything self-made and new!

The entries into our "In the Library" challenge were gorgeous, by the way, and Debi will be back next Tuesday with her Top 3 and winner.

For this theme, I decided to decorate a large perfume bottle I'd picked up from Dunelm Mill last week.

I used some pre-printed tissue paper which I bought from Crafty Individuals, cut it to size, and gave it a couple of coats of watered down emulsion.  I then over-stamped it with the background stamp from TH Papillon set and a SU flourish, then adhered to the main body and the neck of the bottle with multi matte medium.  The sentiment on the front of the bottle is by Darkroom Door.

I added some lace, a beaded trim and narrow ribbon with a glue gun, and to the stopper of the bottle I added a ball chain with some charms: a key, a heart padlock, part of a recycled necklace, and a bezel with a CI stamped image and a metal corner encased in Ice Resin.  A little Paperartsy Metallic Glaze was painted onto the rim of the bottle, and also the bottom part of the stopper.

In The Library - Craft-Room Challenge DT

Hi, I hope you've all enjoyed your Easter weekend and break, if you were lucky enough to have one.  At least the weather has been quite nice here, for a change! 

It's time for a new theme over at the Craft-Room Challenge and this time, it's the turn of our very talented Debi to choose the theme, which is:

In The Library

Debi loves books, and would like to see us use

books, stamps of books, mini books, altered books, pages from books, text, script, etc. 

 

For my DT sample, I used one of those papier mache book-shaped boxes - they usually come in a set of two, and this is the larger one:

 

 

I've painted it all over with black gesso to start, then used Rub n Buff in Antique Gold on the spine.  I've then used a couple of pages torn from a book, painted with a wash of emulsion, for the front and back. 

 

The Paper Artsy image has been stamped onto cream cardstock, torn out and a little Vintage Photo and Walnut Stain added round the edges, then I adhered a mica tile over it.  From the same plate, the sentiment "Bookworm" was added at the bottom of the image.  Across the top and the bottom, I've used some Viva Ferro metal effect colour in gold, then stamped into it with a CI crackle stamp, and highlighted it with some more Rub n Buff (there's lots of Rub n Buff on this creation!).  A pen nib has been added to the top, along with some TH Chit Chat stickers, and a TH Hitch Fastener.

 

When you open the box.....

 

...it has been painted, again with black gesso, and lined with unpainted torn book pages.  I've then filled it with little plain pieces of notepaper - maybe to make notes of the books you have read or want to read - and tied them up with some paper string.  A little Rub n Buff around the edges just to finish it off.

Valentine Ring Box - Craft-Room Challenge DT

Hi, first of all...Happy New Year!  I hope you had a wonderful and restful Christmas, and enjoyed the break and all the festivities.  I always find it a bit sad once the christmas tree and decorations come down, as everywhere looks a bit bare and you know it really is the end of the break for another year.

So, I'm sure you will be pleased to know that it's time for another challenge over at the Craft-Room, and this time it's Nikki's turn to host.  She has chosen the theme of:

VALENTINE

We loved seeing your tags, it was great to see so many variations and different techniques - Hazel definitely has her work cut out to choose just three!  My creation for this challenge is a little wooden heart-shaped ring box:

It was undercoated (inside and out) with Gesso then painted a few times with Chalk White chalky emulsion.  I then stamped part of a rose in two places, coloured with Inktense pencils, and added another thin coat of emulsion, then lightly sanded.   I stamped the Darkroom Door sentiment, the CI swirls on the lid, and the CI flowers on the sides, in black Archival Ink.  I edged in a dark black/gold metallic paste around the top of the lid, then attached the heart trim and seam binding bow with a glue gun.  The two intricate metal embellishments were coated with Viva Decor Metal paint in Mother Of Pearl, and attached with glossy accents - the bottom one was gently bent to fit onto the front.

The inside is simply decorated with a single CI flower inside the base (not shown) and also inside the lid.  As I'm not putting a ring in this little box, I decided to put a Docrafts key charm inside, and wrapped in a piece of white cotton which I stamped with a Darkroom Door keyhole.  I thought I could give it to Dave on Valentines Day and he could put the key charm on his keyring - aren't I an old romantic, lol!!!

Tick Tock - Craft-Room Challenge

Hi, I hope you enjoyed our Oriental theme over at the Craft-Room Challenge, your entries were gorgeous.  However, it's now time for a new theme, which the lovely Suzanne has chosen, which is:

 "Tick Tock"

we would like to see a clock or timepiece on your creation. 

For my creation, I have done the first page in a "Piggy Tales" board book which the lovely Julia gave to me.  I had never seen one of these before, the little windows slide open and closed so you can hide pictures behind.  I thought it would be lovely to use this theme to start off a sort of keepsake book for my grandson, Ethan - nursery rhymes and stories are becoming more and more frequent in our house, lol, and I had just the stamp!

I've coloured the base with Weathered Wood DI and stamped the Crafty Individuals image (CI  onto some white cardstock coloured with Antique Linen.  The footprints inside the "clock" were also stamped in weathered wood and the "tick tock"cut out of Kraft on the Cricut.  I've restamped the image a couple of times and cut some of the mice out and used them for 3, 6, and 9 on the clock - these are no ordinary mice, they're very special as some only have one ear (and some may have none!), and they all have jute tails as their original ones were chopped off (my cutting skills leave a lot to be desired lol).  Some lace has been added to finish.  When the whole book is finished, I will share it with you.

Sweet Memories - Charms and/or Pins for Craft-Room Challenge

Hello, I can't believe how quickly have the last two weeks gone!  Over at the Craft-Room Challenge, your Fashion entries over the last fortnight were stunning - it's so lovely to see your different styles.  It's now time for a new challenge , and this time it's Nikki's turn to choose the theme (please check out her blog to see her fantastic creations).  Nikki would like to see us use:

Charms and/or Pins

I decided to alter/decorate a double wooden arch in some lovely pastel colour acrylic paints which I recently picked up:

The bare arch had two coats of gesso and a light sanding, then was painted (two coats again) of Docrafts acrylic paint in Linen, with a little Adirondack Acrylic Paint Dabber in Shell Pink, with more sanding in between coats for a nice, smooth stamping surface.  I stamped the two images in Coffee Archival Ink, masked them, then stamped the background (TH Papillion) in Archival Ink in Pale Ochre.  Some more acrylics in green & pink were diluted down to make a bit of a translucent wash, then used to colour the images.  When these were dry I applied crackle medium to just parts of the images, and seed beads in copper for the centres of the sunflowers.

 

Two silver butterfly charms were embossed -  the left one with Aged Ivory embossing enamel and the right one with Shabby Green embossing enamel.  Aged Ivory embossing enamel was also added around the edges of the arches, some lace dyed with distress stain added along the bottom, and a few flowers with little pearls and a couple of hat pins to finish.

The stamps I've used for the two main images are Crafty Individuals CI-188 on the right, and Chapel Road Artstamps (Artishapes) on the left.  

This is quite a colourful piece for me, lol!

Use Your Favourite Embellishments at LIIU

Hi, it's time for another challenge over at Let's Ink It Up - we loved your bling last month.  The new theme for our challenge this month is:

Use Your Favourite Embellishments

This is my creation, using my favourite embellishments of vintage style lace, ribbon and pearls:

The inspiration for this purse from Happy Daze came from Paula Tidman over at Ephemera's Attic - she has made the most beautiful purses, and recently did a tutorial for them in Craft Stamper, so I followed the tutorial aiming for the vintage/shabby chic look which I love.  Thank you Paula, your creations are most definitely an inspiration..

As in the tutorial, I did three coats of gesso mixed with a little acrylic and stamped in black archival ink.  The image, by Crafty Individuals were tinted in Inktense blocks and the trim (which, can you believe, was 50p per metre!), was added with Dunelm's fabric glue (this is fantastic stuff) and the handmade rolled roses were added with a glue gun (only minor burns this time, lol).

Emboss It! Craft-Room Challenge DT

Hi, what fantastic entries we had in the "Ink It" challenge, over at the Craft-Room -  Nikki will have a very tough job choosing a top 3.  The winner of the random draw, and the top 3, will be posted on Tuesday, 8th May.

Moving onto our new challenge, it was Esther's turn to choose the theme and she has chosen "Emboss It" - please pop over to Esther's blog and have a look around, as her creations are fabulous.  The usual rules apply - check out the Craft-Room blog for full details.

My creation started out as something completely different, then I found a plank of wood and it all changed, lol.  Embossing is something I do like, but certainly don't do enough of.  I've used a combination of embossing techniques on this, and it even hangs as well! 

I have mounted three Tando mini book pages onto a piece of wood which has been coloured with Liberon dye and swiped with Inka Gold in Platinum.

The three chipboard book pages were covered in gesso mixed with a little Wedgewood Blue acrylic paint, then I added Distress Inks in Chipped Sapphire, Dusty Concord and Fired Brick.  I spritzed with water to blend and dried with a heat gun.  The two end pieces were then stamped with a SU swirl background stamp in Chipped Sapphire and embossed with clear embossing powder - it's really made the swirls pop.  The middle piece was dry embossed with a lovely elegant embossing folder I won from Marie at Dolly Daydreams in the Get Creative Challenge, towards the end of last year.

The CI images were stamped onto white card coloured with Spun Sugar, Milled Lavender, and Stormy Sky Distress Inks, and edged with Chipped Sapphire.

  

I coloured the images with some of the inks spritzed with a little water.










The two sentiments were stamped on the offcuts of the card from the images, then triple embossed with clear UTEE.  I have a bit of glitter on my Versamark pad and this has transferred onto the sentiments and given them a slight twinkle, which looks quite nice.





I've added some sparkly lace (Dunelm Mill) across the bottom of each piece, a metal heart inscribed with "Love" between the two sentiments and topped with a tiny pink diamante, then mounted them all onto the piece of wood.  I had my other half search high and low for two eye-hooks to screw into the top of the wood so I could use some cord to hang it from :-)

These CI images remind me of when we used to visit my nana in Southern Ireland each year as children, and my sister and I would play on the beach at the end of her front garden, so I'm going to give this to my sister for her birthday next month.

Chunky ATC - LIIU DT Creation

Hi, it's time for another challenge over at Lets Ink It Up.  I loved looking at your flowers during the last challenge - your entries were stunning.  The theme for this challenge is:

Distressing

I decided to have a go at a chunky ATC, and, after a bit of a sand down, this is how it ended up (grab a cuppa, there are 5 sides to this, lol).

I painted it all over with an acrylic paint dabber (a few coats) in Pebble and overstamped with a crackle stamp. All of the CI images, apart from the one on the back, were stamped onto inked Tando inchies and fnished with a Krylon pen and distress stickles. Some fabric twill tape was dyed with Distress Stain in Aged Mahogony (my new favourite colour :-)) and adhered around the bottom.

The front:   I gave it a couple of coats of Shell Pink through a brickwork mask to create a "wall" then another light sand down to rough it up a bit.  Some "grafitti" stamped on the wall with a Snow Cap paint dabber and inked and torn paper added, along with some embellishments.  The wooden dress form has also been painted with an acrylic paint dabber then overstamped with a Darkroom Door Damask background stamp, then covered in Distress Crackle in Rock Candy and finished with a gold Krylon pen.

The Sides:   These were covered with some scraps of inked dp left over from another project and a CI image added to each side (stamped on Tando inchie) and a little Aged Gold embossing enamel.






The Back:  A CI image was stamped onto a scrap of dp, a piece of mica tile placed over it, then an alcohol inked metal frame added over the top, with some embellishments added.

The Top:  This was covered in tissue tape and inked.  The Grungeboard letters were coloured with Aged Mahogony Distress Stain then covered in Distress Crackle in Rock Candy and a few inked roses added.

On the bottom, I used a wooden cotton reel which I stained then a little Rub n Buff added, and adhered to the base as a stand.

For Those Special Things

Hi, another Friday night - best night of the week!  I haven't posted much over the last couple of weeks, or visited the blogs as I'd like, so I do apologise.  We're house hunting at the moment and it is taking up soooo much time.  I hope we find something soon.

This little creation has taken me all week, doing just a little each night.  As some of you know, my daughter is pregnant.  Well, she commented last week that next year will be her first Mother's Day, so I decided to make her a little surprise gift for this year.  I've created a few pockets here and there, so she has a special place to keep her scan photographs etc safe.  I've tried to theme it around her becoming a mother and having her own family.  Grab a coffee because there are a few photos!

The front and back covers are made from mountboard and the pages are made of doubled plain Kraft cardstock.  I have mounted printed & embossed Kraft cardstock onto the front and back covers, which has been spritzed with a home made mix of Walnut Ink and perfect pearls.  Tags have been used to show 2 of the 3 pockets in the photos.  Will try and get a good pic of the top pocket between pages 3 & 4 and add it later.

Stamps used are The Stampsmith (from Portrait of a Lady), various Crafty Individuals ones, and Creative Expressions Vintage Sewing.  I've also used Websters Pages & Melissa Frances dps, and a whole mixture of other things, such as various Tim Holtz bits (button, ornate plate, salvage stickers, ticket), trim, flowers, distress ink, distress embossing powder, a button, sewing thread (around the cotton reels), dyed seam binding, and more!  All stamping has been done in Coffee archival ink. 

This is the first time I've made one of these, and I'm really happy with how it's turned out.

Shabby Vintage - Craft-Room Challenge DT Project

Hi, it's not only time for another challenge now over at the Craft-Room, it's also time for a few changes as well!  First of all though, I'd just like to say what fabulous and inspiring entries we had into our Colour challenge!  This week, it was the lovely Mervi's turn to choose the theme, and she chose Shabby Vintage -  please check out her blog as it's full of wonderful creations to inspire.

Before I go any further, I just need to let you know about a couple of changes. This is my Shabby Vintage creation - in fabric:

I wanted to give this quite a soft look, so I decided use fabric as much as possible throughout.  The floral fabric is by Laura Ashley and was something I purchased from Ebay about three years ago, with the intention of making curtains, however I didn't get round to them and, as we are now looking to move house, I will wait until we're there - I do hope our new house has smaller windows as I've lopped a big piece off the bottom now!  I glued it to a piece of mountboard with fabric glue.  

For the next panel on top, I've used some double sided canvas and sanded the dark side (this softened it up lovely), then stamped a CI crackle background (CI-116) using Archival Ink in Coffee, distressed the edges and and attached using a glue gun: 

For the image panel (I used CI-277 for the image and sentiments), I was tempted to try Paula's technique which she uses for her bags & purses (thank you Paula!), so I primed a small piece of bare canvas with gesso (tinted with acrylic) and stamped the image, again using Coffee Archival Ink.  I then coloured the image using a little ink from inktense blocks picked up with a damp brush,  and dabbed a little Frayed Burlap DI around the edge.  I matted it onto some torn and scrunched Glassine paper and fixed it through the canvas and mountboard with long fasteners:

I've stamped two of the quotes from the same plate as the image, inked the edges, and mounted onto glassine again.  The roses have been made by cutting strips of the same fabric and twisting and rolling, using a glue gun to hold in place, and also to attach. 

Some cream fabric lace trim across the bottom, and twine to hang (yes, it hangs as well!), using two little pearls as stoppers, and it's finished:
